Maddogs wrap up the spring, and join a new conference
A 26–7–2 sevens record, Carter Field under construction, and a new home in the Liberty Conference.
With Madison Park no longer an option, Parsons Field only available for official matches in the spring and Carter Field about to be rebuilt, NU Rugby was once again a semi-homeless pack of Dogs this spring. Even so, the boys finished the 2017 campaign with a 26–7–2 record in their sevens tournaments, with notable wins over Wheeling Jesuit, UMass and UNH.
Valuable practice time was hard to come by, so there was no fifteens this spring, but construction of a major facility at Carter Field on Columbus Ave has begun. It’s an exciting look at what the club has to look forward to: a permanent on-campus practice facility, with Parsons still our home pitch.
A new conference
After some turmoil in the ECRC over the winter, the Dogs will play in the New England Division of the newly formed Liberty Conference this fall, alongside URI, UNH, UConn, Fairfield, UMass and Tufts, with cross-division bowl games at the end of the season. BC is staying independent this year, but we’ll meet them in the Fall Rugby Classic.
Congratulations, graduates
Congratulations to this year’s graduating Maddogs, Zack Whelan, Brian Clancey, Mike Dello Russo, Troy Sorrento, Grant Merrill and Neil Hones, and to the graduating Lady Maddogs, Maureen McInerney, Ellie Williams, Carrie Ambo and Lei Lei Zhou. Good luck!
Despite losing seven seniors, Coach Ed is excited about two BC High seniors choosing NU this fall, along with two players from England, adding to a strong youth movement.
