The 2017 Maddogs with the bowl trophy in front of the scoreboard

Liberty Conference New England Division champions, and a 42–10 bowl win over SUNY Cortland.

NU Rugby is back on top of the Northeast in Division 1A! The 2017 Maddogs finished a perfect 8–0, winning the Liberty Conference New England Division with a showdown win over UConn, 6–0 against 6–0, and then a 42–10 blowout of SUNY Cortland in the Liberty Conference bowl at Fairfield.

Is this team better than the Ten Ton Scrum of the late 80s? The 1990 undefeated Maddogs? The Criminals of the late 1990s? The Sean O’Leary years? The 2011–12 Sweet 16 beasts? The CRC era? These questions are fodder for debate into the eons!

Our deepest thanks go to coaches Ed Tubridy, Alex Micco and Bob Carroll for the tremendous work they did with the 2017 Maddogs.

The club is on the cusp of a milestone we’ve been chasing since our founding in 1984. Northeastern is stepping up with ongoing financial support and a brand-new practice facility on campus, working with the students and alumni to set the club up to compete consistently with any team in the country.

Northeastern’s own news service took notice too, featuring the club’s “brotherhood” and the men’s 8–0 season in a round-up of a standout fall for club sports.

Winter gathering, January 20

Join us at the Alumni Center on Columbus Ave on Saturday, January 20 at 6:30pm to celebrate the team and coaches, tour the Carter Field construction, hear from the coaches, NU and FONUR, and begin choosing the first team for the new Maddog Rugby Hall of Fame. Afterwards we’ll head to Matthews Arena for NU hockey against UMass.
